Shopify agentic storefronts explained
An agentic storefront is the surface Shopify exposes so AI channels can read a store’s catalogue and transact against it. Shopify’s documentation says these are active by default for eligible stores, so for most merchants the question is not whether to switch it on but whether the store meets the requirements, and whether the data behind it is good enough to win a comparison.
Active by default is the important part
Shopify’s documentation says agentic storefronts are active by default for eligible stores. That single fact changes the question a merchant should be asking.
It is not "should we do this". It is "is this already happening, and is it going well". A store can have been exposed to agent traffic for months, failing on missing variant data or an unreadable returns policy, with nothing in any report to indicate it.
What the surface needs from you
Shopify lists published store policies among the requirements for selling through agentic storefronts, and the rest of what makes the surface useful is the ordinary catalogue quality that decides every comparison.
- Policies published as text rather than set in graphics. See how to publish policies as text, not images.
- Price and availability correct at variant level, not just at product level.
- Identifiers where they exist, so you can be matched to the same product elsewhere.
- A catalogue that is complete rather than partial, since a channel that only sees your bestsellers only sells your bestsellers.
Being present is not being competitive
The failure mode specific to a default-on surface is a store that is technically participating and structurally losing. Your products are readable, your prices are there, your shipping cost is not, so every comparison against a store that published one goes the other way.

Questions
How do I know if my store is eligible?
Check Shopify’s own current documentation rather than any summary, including this one, because eligibility rules are exactly the kind of thing that changes without announcement. Published store policies are among the requirements Shopify lists.
Can I opt out?
Treat that as a decision to make deliberately rather than a default to accept in either direction. Opting out removes you from a channel; leaving it on while your product data is thin means being present and losing comparisons, which is not the same as being absent.
Does an agentic storefront replace my normal storefront?
No. It is an additional surface on the same catalogue. Everything that makes your ordinary storefront good for shoppers still applies, and the data hygiene that makes the agentic surface work tends to improve search and ads as well.
