Can AI agents buy from a Magento store?
Magento, now Adobe Commerce, publishes no catalogue endpoint an anonymous agent can read. Its APIs are authenticated, so an agent sees what a shopper sees: product pages, one at a time. That makes the structured data on those pages the whole of what an agent knows about a Magento catalogue, and a missing price or availability field is not a small gap.
How Ottom reads a Magento catalogue
Source: product pages, read one at a time. There is no anonymous catalogue endpoint, so Ottom falls back to the sitemap and reads the schema.org JSON-LD on the product pages it names. That works, and it is bounded: the scan reads a small sample rather than the catalogue. It is also exactly what an agent has to do, which is the point of measuring it this way.
What works in your favour
- Magento emits schema.org product markup by default in most themes, so a page that has not been customised usually parses.
- Category structure is explicit, which helps an agent narrow a search before it starts opening pages.
Where agents tend to stop
- No feed means an agent must open a page per product, so anything missing from a page is simply unknown to it.
- Heavily customised themes commonly drop price or availability from the markup while still showing both to a person.
- Layered navigation and configurable products often need JavaScript to resolve a variant, which a data-only reader cannot do.
Read about these first
- No machine-readable product feed
- Price is not readable without running the page
- Choosing a variant needs JavaScript the agent cannot run
How often this happens on Magento: not stated here. Ottom publishes frequency by retail category rather than by platform, so there is no per-platform figure to quote. The benchmark pages carry the category view, and publish one only once enough of its stores have been measured at every stage.
Questions
Why can an agent read my Shopify competitor and not me?
Because Shopify publishes a product feed and Magento does not. On Magento an agent is reading your product pages one at a time, so it only knows what those pages say in machine-readable form. The fix is not to move platform: it is to make sure price, availability and variants are in the structured data on the page.
Does the Adobe Commerce REST API help?
Not for an anonymous agent. It needs credentials, and a shopping agent arriving at your store has none. Anything you want an agent to know has to be readable without logging in, which in practice means the markup on the page and the feeds you choose to publish.
