AI agents and electronics stores
Electronics is the category where identifiers matter most. An agent comparing a specific model across stores needs a GTIN or an MPN to know it is looking at the same thing, and a listing without one is a listing it cannot confidently include in a comparison. The buy path is usually simpler here than in apparel; the evaluate and compare stages are harder.
What makes this category harder
- A model number is the whole basis of comparison, and a missing identifier removes you from it.
- Compatibility and specification data is what a shopper asks about and is often only in prose.
- Price changes frequently, so a feed that lags the page produces two answers to one question.
Where agents stop, and why here
- Products have no GTIN or MPN to match against
without an identifier an agent cannot match your listing to the model asked for
- Feed price and storefront price disagree
feed and page disagreeing is common where prices move fast
- Product feed is out of date with the storefront
fast-moving stock makes an out-of-date feed actively misleading
How often this happens in electronics: not stated here. Frequency belongs to the benchmark, which publishes a category only once enough of its stores have been measured at every stage, and says plainly when it has not. The electronics benchmark is the page that answers this, whichever way it currently reads.
Questions
We sell own-brand hardware with no barcodes. What do we do?
Publish an MPN of your own and use it consistently. The point of an identifier is not that it is global, it is that the same product carries the same value everywhere you list it, so an agent can tell two listings are one product.
Or work through the full checklist.
