Can AI agents buy from a PrestaShop store?
PrestaShop serves storefronts an agent reads page by page, with no anonymous catalogue endpoint: its web service API is key-based. Because PrestaShop is self-hosted and heavily themed, what an agent gets varies more between two PrestaShop stores than between two stores on a hosted platform.
How Ottom reads a PrestaShop catalogue
Source: product pages, read one at a time. Ottom reads the sitemap where one is published and takes product data from the schema.org markup on each page. Where a theme has removed that markup, the scan reports the store as unreadable at that stage rather than guessing from the visible text.
What works in your favour
- The default themes emit product structured data, so a standard installation usually parses.
- Category structure is explicit and well linked, which helps an agent narrow a search cheaply.
Where agents tend to stop
- Self-hosting means outdated themes and modules are common, and older themes predate the markup an agent needs.
- Combination pickers often depend on the theme’s own scripts with no form fallback.
- Multi-shop and multi-language setups can route an agent to a storefront other than the one intended.
Read about these first
- Product pages have no schema.org markup
- Choosing a variant needs JavaScript the agent cannot run
- Variants are not described in structured data
How often this happens on PrestaShop: not stated here. Ottom publishes frequency by retail category rather than by platform, so there is no per-platform figure to quote. The benchmark pages carry the category view, and publish one only once enough of its stores have been measured at every stage.
Questions
We are on an older PrestaShop. Is that the problem?
Often, and not always. What matters is whether your theme puts price, availability and combinations into the page markup, which older themes frequently do not. A scan tells you which of those are missing rather than blaming the version.
Does the web service API help?
Not for an agent arriving cold, because it needs a key. Anything you want an agent to know has to be readable without one, which means the markup on the page.
