Can AI agents buy from a Shopware store?
A Shopware store publishes no catalogue an anonymous agent can read. Its Store API needs an access key issued per sales channel, so an AI agent arriving cold reads the storefront, one product page at a time. What it learns there depends on how those pages mark up price, availability and variants, and the default Shopware 6 theme has long done that in microdata rather than JSON-LD.
How Ottom reads a Shopware catalogue
Source: product pages, read one at a time. Ottom reads the sitemap Shopware generates for each sales channel and opens the product pages it lists. It takes prices and stock from schema.org JSON-LD. Where a page carries microdata only, the scan counts the product markup as present and does not guess at values it did not read.
What works in your favour
- Sitemaps are generated per sales channel, so an agent can find products without guessing URLs.
- The default Storefront theme marks up products in schema.org, so a page that has not been customised states what it sells.
- Guest checkout is built in, so an agent need not create an account unless the store has switched guest orders off.
Where agents tend to stop
- Prices and stock in microdata only are harder for an agent to read than the same values in JSON-LD.
- Choosing a variant usually goes through the theme’s scripts, which a reader without JavaScript cannot follow.
- Sales channels and language domains can send an agent to a storefront other than the one a shopper would land on.
Read about these first
- No machine-readable product feed
- Choosing a variant needs JavaScript the agent cannot run
- Checkout requires creating an account
How often this happens on Shopware: not stated here. Ottom publishes frequency by retail category rather than by platform, so there is no per-platform figure to quote. The benchmark pages carry the category view, and publish one only once enough of its stores have been measured at every stage.
Questions
Does the Shopware Store API make us readable?
Not to an agent that has no access key. The Store API is built for your own front end and for partners you hand a key to. A shopping agent arriving from a chat window has none, so what it reads is the storefront.
What is the highest value change on Shopware?
Making sure price, availability and variants are in JSON-LD on every product page. Shopware 6.7.9 and later can emit JSON-LD in place of microdata behind a feature flag your developer can switch on, and on older versions a structured data plugin does the same job. A scan tells you which values an agent could read before and after.
We still run Shopware 5. Does the scan work?
Yes. The scan reads what any agent would read, whatever version built the page, and the report names Shopware either way. What it measures is your storefront, not the version number.
