Shopify product feeds for AI agents

Most Shopify stores already generate a product feed for advertising, and reusing it is the fastest way to become cheap to enumerate. Two things usually need fixing first: advertising feeds are often deliberately partial, covering only promoted products, and they refresh on a schedule set for ad platforms rather than one that keeps pace with price and stock changes.

A product feed is what makes your catalogue readable in one request rather than reconstructed page by page, and most Shopify stores already generate one for advertising. Reusing it is the fastest route, provided you check the two ways an advertising feed differs from the one you want.

Advertising feeds are often partial

A feed built for ads frequently excludes products you do not advertise: low margin lines, clearance, items that failed a policy check on some ad platform. That is a sensible decision for advertising and the wrong shape here, because it makes part of your catalogue invisible.

Check the item count in your feed against your actual product count. If they differ substantially, find out why before pointing anything at it.

Advertising refresh schedules are set for a different consumer

Ad platforms tolerate a lag that a comparison does not. A feed carrying yesterday’s prices is confidently wrong, and an agent has no reason to double check it against your page.

This is the failure worth taking seriously, because it costs you comparisons in the direction you never hear about. See how to keep a product feed fresh and stale feed.

What the feed needs to carry

  • A stable identifier per variant, and a GTIN where one exists.
  • Price and currency matching what a shopper actually pays, including any discount applied at render.
  • Availability at variant level.
  • A canonical URL per item.
  • Enough attribute detail to answer the constraints your category is chosen on.

Check it the way an agent would

Fetch the URL cold, from outside your network, with no credentials. Confirm it resolves without a challenge, completes in reasonable time, and contains a product you added this week and a price you changed yesterday.

Questions

Can I point agents at my ads feed?

Usually yes as a starting point. Check two things before relying on it: that it covers your whole catalogue rather than only advertised products, and that its refresh keeps up with your price and stock changes.

Do I need a feed if Shopify already exposes my catalogue?

The platform surface and a feed serve overlapping purposes, and having a current, complete feed is cheap insurance. What matters is that a complete and accurate view of your catalogue is obtainable in one request from somewhere.

How fresh does it need to be?

Fresh enough that its answers are right when read. Tie a rebuild to price and stock changes rather than to a nightly job, and monitor the age of the data inside the file rather than whether the URL responds.
