Is your Shopify store agent ready?
A Shopify store is agent ready when an agent can read its catalogue without running scripts and reach the payment step from a cold session. The Shopify specific risks are app accumulation, which adds overlays and checkout steps nobody decided on, and theme behaviour, which changes what exists in the markup rather than only how it looks.
Check what your theme actually emits
Themes vary widely in what they publish as structured data. A valid Product object with a name and an image and no price is common, and it looks correct to a validator because it is correct: it is simply not useful.
Fetch a product URL and read the served markup rather than inspecting the rendered page. Check price, availability, variant level data and an identifier. See how to add product schema for AI agents.
Audit the apps, not just the theme
App accumulation is the Shopify specific risk. Each app was installed for a good reason by somebody who is possibly no longer here, and the combined effect on a cold session is rarely tested.
- Popups and consent tools that block interaction. See how to stop popups blocking agent checkout.
- Cart page upsells that interrupt the path to checkout.
- Review and rating widgets that render after load, so the ratings are invisible to anything reading the markup.
- Region or currency selectors that demand an answer before anything works.
The two components that break checkout
The variant picker and the add to cart control carry nearly all of the mechanical failures. A picker that only responds to a hover, or options attached client side, leaves an agent at a product it wants and unable to say which version. An add to cart that is a styled element with a click handler is not an expressible action.
See Shopify themes that break agent checkout.
Then test it properly
Signed out, no cookies, narrow mobile viewport, a product that needs a variant chosen, stopping at the payment step. Everything you supply reflexively on the way, a dismissed modal, an accepted banner, a chosen region, is a point where an agent stops.

Questions
Does Shopify handle structured data for me?
Partly, through the theme, and the coverage varies. Many themes emit a valid Product object with the name and image and omit price or availability, or fill them from values that are correct only at build time. Check what your store actually emits on a real product rather than trusting that the feature exists.
Which apps cause the most trouble?
Anything that renders an overlay or adds a step in the cart or checkout: popups, consent tools, upsells, region selectors and review widgets that load after the page. None of them was installed to harm anything, and they accumulate without a decision ever being taken.
Do I need to change my theme?
Usually not wholesale. The failures cluster in two components, the variant picker and the add to cart control, and both are normally fixable in place without touching the design.
