How Google AI Mode chooses products

When a purchase completes inside the channel, the product record rather than the product page is what competes, so feed completeness, freshness and identifier coverage do more work than anything on your storefront. That inverts the usual priority order, where a store invests in pages first and treats the feed as an export.

When a purchase completes inside the channel, the thing competing on your behalf is your product record rather than your product page. Shopify’s help centre describes shoppers using Google AI Mode completing "in the AI channel’s Shopify-powered direct checkout without having to leave their chat conversation".

That inverts the usual priority order, in which a store invests in its pages and treats the feed as an export nobody looks at.

The record is the storefront

Everything a shopper would have learned by looking at your page has to be in the data: what the product is, what it costs delivered, whether the size they want is available, what happens if they send it back.

Anything absent is not a weaker impression, it is an unanswered filter. See how to publish a product feed for AI agents.

Three properties that decide it

  1. Completeness. A feed covering only advertised products makes the rest of your catalogue unsellable in this channel.
  2. Freshness. A wrong price loses in both directions, and the direction that loses comparisons is the one you never hear about.
  3. Identity. Without an identifier you are not a competing offer on a known product, so you are compared as an unknown.

Where merchants misspend effort

Two common misallocations. The first is investing in page content in the belief that it transfers; it does not, because no page is loaded. The second is treating the ads feed as sufficient without checking coverage or refresh cadence, both of which are usually set for a different consumer.

See Shopify product feeds for AI agents and how to keep a product feed fresh.

The check worth running

Take your feed, pick a product, and answer the four filters from the record alone: delivered total, variant availability, delivery expectation, returns terms. If you cannot, neither can anything else.

Questions

Is my search ranking relevant here?

Less than you would hope. Ranking rewards a page satisfying a query. This rewards a record answering a constraint, and the two are decided by different inputs.

What single change helps most?

Usually making the delivered total computable, because a missing shipping cost removes you from budget filtered comparisons entirely rather than placing you lower in them.

How often does the record need to be right?

Whenever it is read, which is not a schedule you control. That argues for rebuilding on change rather than nightly, and for monitoring the age of the data rather than whether the file downloads.
