How to appear in Google AI Mode shopping results
Appearing in an AI channel where the purchase completes in-channel is decided by your product record rather than your product page, which means feed completeness, freshness and identifier coverage matter more than the page level work most stores invest in. Search ranking does not transfer, because ranking rewards a page satisfying a query and this rewards a record answering a constraint.
When the purchase completes inside the channel, what competes on your behalf is the product record rather than the product page. Shopify’s help centre describes shoppers using Google AI Mode completing "in the AI channel’s Shopify-powered direct checkout without having to leave their chat conversation".
So the work that matters most is the work most stores treat as an export nobody reads.
Fix the feed first
- Coverage. Check the item count against your actual catalogue. Advertising feeds commonly exclude products you do not promote, which makes those unsellable in this channel.
- Freshness. Rebuild on price and stock changes rather than nightly, and monitor the age of the data rather than whether the URL responds. See how to keep a product feed fresh.
- Identity. Add a GTIN at variant level wherever one exists, so you are a competing offer rather than an unknown.
- Totals. Publish shipping so a delivered total is computable, which is what budget filters actually use.
Why search ranking does not transfer
Ranking rewards a page that satisfies a query and is influenced by things with no analogue here: page experience, internal linking, content depth. A comparison in an AI channel rewards a product record that answers a constraint.
The two overlap in that both like accurate, complete information, and they diverge in almost everything else. See SEO vs GEO vs AEO for ecommerce.
If products are excluded
Treat an exclusion as a data finding rather than a verdict. The usual causes are a missing identifier, an unstated policy or an availability field that is correct only while an item is in stock, and each is fixable in your own systems.
Questions
Does ranking in search carry over?
Not directly. They are decided by different inputs. A store with strong content and thin structured product data can rank well and lose consistently here.
Is my ads feed good enough?
Check coverage and refresh cadence before relying on it. Advertising feeds are often deliberately partial and refresh on a schedule set for ad platforms rather than for live comparisons.
What if my whole catalogue is not eligible?
Find out why rather than accepting it, because the reasons are usually fixable data problems: a missing identifier, an unstated policy, an availability value that is only correct when the answer is yes.
