Can Gemini buy from your store?
Shopify’s help centre says shoppers using Google AI Mode, Gemini or Microsoft Copilot complete their purchase in the AI channel’s Shopify-powered direct checkout without leaving the conversation. For a Shopify merchant that means your checkout is not in the path at all and your published product data carries the entire sale, which changes what is worth fixing first.
For Shopify merchants there is a documented answer. Shopify’s help centre says shoppers using Google AI Mode, Gemini or Microsoft Copilot complete their purchase "in the AI channel’s Shopify-powered direct checkout without having to leave their chat conversation".
That single sentence changes the shape of the work, because it takes your checkout out of the path entirely.
Your data carries the whole sale
When the purchase completes in the channel, there is no product page for a shopper to be persuaded by and no checkout of yours to optimise. What decides whether you are chosen is what you published.
- Price that matches what a shopper actually pays, including any discount applied at render.
- Availability at variant level, correct when the answer is no.
- An identifier, so you are a competing offer on a known product rather than an unknown.
- Shipping cost and returns terms, stated before checkout rather than revealed at it.
A missing field here is not a smaller chance of selling, it is usually being dropped from the comparison. See will AI agents recommend my products.
You may already be in this channel
Shopify’s documentation says agentic storefronts are active by default for eligible stores. So the question is generally not whether to participate but whether the participation is going well, and there is nothing in a normal report that would tell you.
See Shopify agentic storefronts explained.
Both patterns at once
A single store can be selling under in-channel checkout for these assistants and sending ChatGPT shoppers to its own checkout at the same time, which means neither half of the work can be skipped. See which assistants send shoppers to your own checkout.
Questions
If my checkout is not involved, what decides whether I sell?
Your data. Price, availability at variant level, identifiers, shipping cost and returns terms are the whole basis of the decision, because there is no page for a shopper to look at and no chance to persuade anyone after the comparison.
Does this apply if I am not on Shopify?
The documented statement is Shopify’s and describes Shopify-powered checkout. On another platform, check your own platform’s documentation. The underlying requirement, readable and complete product data, is the same either way.
Can I be selling this way without knowing?
Yes. Shopify’s documentation says agentic storefronts are active by default for eligible stores, so a merchant can be exposed to this channel without ever having opted in.
