Profound alternative: test whether AI agents can buy
Ottom is an alternative to Profound for a different question. Profound is an AI visibility platform: it measures how your brand appears in AI answers, which sources get cited, and how AI crawlers and assistants reach your site. Ottom measures what happens after that, when an AI agent tries to buy. It sends an agent to your store to find a product, compare it and reach the payment step, and reports where it stalled. The two are complements more than substitutes.
What Profound does
In its own words, from the pages listed under sources, read on 13 Oct 2026.
- Profound describes itself as the marketing platform for the AI era, helping brands understand, control and scale how they appear across AI search and answer engines.[2]
- Its products cover what people ask AI assistants, what the answers say about your category, which sources they cite, and the sentiment they show toward your brand.[1]
- Its Agent Analytics collects request data at the CDN or server layer to show how AI crawlers and assistants access and use your content.[3]
- It also tracks how visible your products are in ChatGPT Shopping, at SKU level.[1]
What Ottom does
- You give Ottom a web address. There is no script to write or maintain and nothing to install on your store.
- An agent tries to buy something the way an AI assistant shopping for a person would. It finds a product, reads what your pages say about it, compares it, and works through cart and checkout.
- It stops at the payment step on purpose. It never enters card details and never places an order.
- The report names the stage where the agent stalled, what it was looking at, and what to change, written so you can forward it to whoever looks after your site.
- Paid plans run on a schedule and alert you by email or Slack when the result changes.
The detail is on how it works.
Profound and Ottom side by side
| Question | Profound | Ottom |
|---|---|---|
| The question it answers | How do AI answers describe, cite and recommend us? | When an AI agent tries to buy from us, does it reach the payment step? |
| How it measures | By capturing AI answers, and by reading AI bot traffic at your CDN or server. | By sending an agent to your store to attempt a purchase. |
| What a result looks like | Visibility, citations, sentiment and AI traffic, over time. | A pass or a stall at one of four stages, what the agent saw, and a fix. |
| Products | How visible your products are in AI shopping results. | Whether an agent can actually buy one of them. |
| Who it is for | Marketing teams. | Store owners, with fixes written to forward to a developer. |
Which one you need
When Profound fits
Profound fits when the question is how AI assistants talk about your brand and your category, which sources shape that, and how much AI traffic reaches you.
When Ottom fits
Ottom fits when the question is whether an agent that reaches your store can actually buy, and where it stops if it cannot.
Using both
Being recommended and being buyable are measured in different ways. A recommendation brings an agent to your product page. Whether it can buy then depends on the page: whether the price is text, whether a size can be chosen without a mouse, whether checkout demands an account. Ottom measures the second and not the first. Together the two cover being found and being buyable.
What Ottom does not do
- Ottom does not run prompts or track mentions, citations, rankings or sentiment in AI answers.
- Ottom does not read your server logs or measure AI traffic to your site.
- Ottom does not write content or change your site. It tells you what to change.
Questions
Is Ottom a replacement for Profound?
No. They measure different things. Profound measures how AI answers describe and cite your brand. Ottom measures whether an agent can complete a purchase on your store. A store can do well on one and badly on the other.
If AI assistants already recommend my products, do I still need Ottom?
A recommendation brings the agent to your product page. What happens next depends on the page. If the agent cannot read the price, choose a variant or get through checkout, it stops there, and nothing on your site records that it did. Ottom shows you whether that happens and where.
Profound has Agent Analytics. Is that the same thing?
No. Profound describes Agent Analytics as reading request data at the CDN or server layer to see how AI crawlers and assistants access your content. That tells you which agents visited and what they fetched. Ottom sends an agent to attempt a purchase, so it tells you whether a visit could have ended in an order.
Does Ottom place real orders?
No. The agent goes as far as the payment step and stops there. It never enters card details and never places an order, on any plan.
