AthenaHQ alternative: test whether AI agents can buy
Ottom is an alternative to AthenaHQ for a different question. AthenaHQ is a generative engine optimization (GEO) platform: it tracks how AI models mention, cite and recommend your brand, and helps you improve that with content agents. Ottom measures what happens when an AI agent tries to buy. It sends an agent to your store to find a product, compare it and reach the payment step, and reports where it stalled. The two are complements more than substitutes.
What AthenaHQ does
In its own words, from the pages listed under sources, read on 13 Oct 2026.
- AthenaHQ describes itself as a generative engine optimization (GEO) platform that helps brands monitor, measure and improve their visibility in AI search.[3]
- It tracks how AI models mention, cite and recommend your brand across platforms and prompts, including visibility, citations, sentiment and competitive movement, across what its home page calls 11 or more major AI models.[1][2][3]
- It takes action through content agents that create and optimise content for AI citation.[3]
- Its Commerce Optimization feature is described as improving product content for AI recommendations, and it reports AI shopping visibility as a product appearance rate.[2]
What Ottom does
- You give Ottom a web address. There is no script to write or maintain and nothing to install on your store.
- An agent tries to buy something the way an AI assistant shopping for a person would. It finds a product, reads what your pages say about it, compares it, and works through cart and checkout.
- It stops at the payment step on purpose. It never enters card details and never places an order.
- The report names the stage where the agent stalled, what it was looking at, and what to change, written so you can forward it to whoever looks after your site.
- Paid plans run on a schedule and alert you by email or Slack when the result changes.
The detail is on how it works.
AthenaHQ and Ottom side by side
| Question | AthenaHQ | Ottom |
|---|---|---|
| The question it answers | How do AI models mention, cite and recommend us, and how do we improve that? | Can an AI agent buy from us, and if not, where does it stop? |
| How it measures | By tracking AI answers across platforms and prompts. | By sending an agent to your store to attempt a purchase. |
| What a result looks like | Visibility, citations, sentiment, share of voice and product appearance rate. | A pass or a stall at one of four stages, what the agent saw, and a fix. |
| What it does about it | Content agents that create and optimise content for AI citation. | A fix for each stall, written to forward to whoever maintains the store. |
Which one you need
When AthenaHQ fits
AthenaHQ fits when the question is how AI search talks about your brand and products, and you want help producing content to change that.
When Ottom fits
Ottom fits when the question is whether an agent that reaches your store can actually buy, and where it stops if it cannot.
Using both
Better product content helps an agent find and judge a product. Buying also depends on things outside the content: how a variant is chosen, whether the cart works without a mouse, whether checkout demands an account. Ottom tests the whole path and names the stage that stalled. Together the two cover being found and being buyable.
What Ottom does not do
- Ottom does not run prompts or track mentions, citations, rankings or sentiment in AI answers.
- Ottom does not read your server logs or measure AI traffic to your site.
- Ottom does not write content or change your site. It tells you what to change.
Questions
Is Ottom a replacement for AthenaHQ?
No. They measure different things. AthenaHQ measures and improves how AI models mention and cite your brand. Ottom measures whether an agent can complete a purchase on your store. A store can do well on one and badly on the other.
If my product content is optimised for AI, is my store buyable?
Not necessarily. Product content matters most for finding and judging a product. An agent can still stop at a size picker that needs a mouse, a cart that needs a script to update, or a checkout that demands an account. Ottom finds which of those, if any, stops it on your store.
Does Ottom write content for me?
No. Ottom does not change your site. It tells you where an agent stalled and what to change, in words you can forward to whoever looks after the store.
Does Ottom place real orders?
No. The agent goes as far as the payment step and stops there. It never enters card details and never places an order, on any plan.
