Acceptable Use Policy

Version 22 September 2026. In force from that date.

This Acceptable Use Policy lists what you may not do with Ottom. It is part of the Terms of Service and applies to everyone who uses Ottom, including through the Shopify app, the command line tool and the API. Our agents visit real stores run by real people, so most of these rules protect them.

1. Do not use Ottom against a store

  • Do not use Ottom to load test a store, probe it for security weaknesses, or slow it down or disrupt it.
  • Do not scan or monitor a store whose owner has opted out, or try to get round an opt-out, a block or our daily limits for a store, for example by opening more accounts or adding the store under another name.
  • Do not monitor a store you neither own nor have permission to monitor. One-off scans of public stores are allowed; repeated monitoring is not.
  • Do not use Ottom to get past a store's password, login or any other barrier you are not authorised to pass, or where the store forbids automated access and you have no right to override that.

2. Do not use Ottom against a store owner

  • Do not use a report or a finding to harass, threaten, embarrass or pressure a store owner, for example by demanding payment to keep findings private.
  • Do not present a report on a store you do not own or manage as Ottom's statement or verdict about that store, or publish it.
  • Prospect links are for offering help to a store owner. Do not use them to imply Ottom has found fault with a store on your behalf, or to suggest Ottom endorses you.

3. Do not copy or misuse Ottom

  • Do not scrape Ottom, copy its reports in bulk, or take apart, reverse engineer or copy its agents, scoring or methodology, except where the law allows it whatever these terms say.
  • Do not use Ottom or its output to build or train a competing product or service.
  • Do not get round usage limits, plan limits, locked content or rate limits, share an account between people, or resell access unless we have agreed it in writing.
  • Do not interfere with Ottom, test its security without our written permission, or send it malicious code.

Category benchmarks are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence and you may reuse them as that licence allows. The open source command line tool is governed by its MIT licence.

4. Do not use Ottom unlawfully

  • Do not point Ottom at a store that sells goods or services that are illegal where it sells them.
  • Do not use Ottom in a way that breaks the law, including consumer protection, competition, data protection and computer misuse law, or that infringes someone else's rights.
  • Do not give us personal data you have no right to share, such as an address to send reports to that does not want them.

5. What we do about it

We may, without notice where the situation needs it: stop scanning a store, pause or hold an account or workspace, cancel a plan, remove a store from a workspace, and contact the store owner directly. Serious or repeated breaches end the contract under the Terms of Service. We will tell you what we did and why, unless the law or the situation prevents it.

To report misuse, write to [email protected]. If you run a store and want our agents to stop visiting it, write to [email protected] from an address on your store's domain.
