WooCommerce agent readiness
WooCommerce gives you control over everything, which means nothing is decided for you: structured data, feeds, caching and checkout behaviour are all outcomes of the plugins and theme you chose. The two specific risks are plugin sprawl, which adds overlays and checkout steps, and an SEO plugin whose product markup is assumed to be complete when it is frequently missing the fields that matter.
Do not assume the SEO plugin covers this
Most WooCommerce stores have a plugin emitting structured data, and most teams treat that as the box being ticked. The common gap is that the emitted Product object carries the name, image and description and omits price, availability or variant level fields.
Those omissions are invisible to a validator, because what is there is valid. Fetch a product URL, read the served markup, and check the four fields that decide a comparison. See how to add product schema for AI agents.
Plugin sprawl is the checkout risk
Every plugin that renders an overlay or adds a step is a place an agent stops, and a WooCommerce store accumulates them faster than most because adding one is easy and removing one is somebody’s afternoon.
- Consent and popup plugins that block interaction until dismissed.
- Checkout field plugins that add required inputs.
- Account plugins that make registration a precondition of paying. See how to offer guest checkout for agents.
- Review plugins that render ratings after load, so the ratings do not count toward you.
Check what an anonymous request receives
Caching layers are a WooCommerce specific source of surprise. A cached page can serve a stale price to an anonymous visitor while a logged in editor sees the current one, so the person checking is systematically the person least likely to see the problem.
Request the page cold, from outside your network, signed out, and read what comes back.
The order of work
- Confirm the markup carries price, availability, variants and an identifier.
- Publish or fix a feed. See how to publish a product feed for AI agents.
- Walk checkout from a cold session on a narrow viewport and remove what blocks it.
- Check your robots rules and your CDN are not deciding this for you.
Questions
My SEO plugin outputs schema. Is that enough?
Check rather than assume. Many emit a Product object with the name, image and description and omit price, availability or variant level data, which is exactly the part a comparison uses. Valid markup and useful markup are different tests.
Does caching cause problems here?
It can, in a specific way: a cached page can serve a stale price or an out of date availability to an agent while a logged in editor sees the current one. Check what an anonymous cold request actually receives.
Do I need a feed plugin?
You need a feed. Whether it comes from a plugin or is generated some other way matters less than whether it is complete and refreshes when prices and stock change.
