What changed when Instant Checkout was retired
Retail Dive reported on 25 March 2026 that OpenAI had announced the previous day it was retiring the first version of Instant Checkout, with checkout moving back to merchant sites. For merchants that is favourable, because the thing being tested is now their own checkout and they keep the customer and the order data, and it is a larger obligation, because a checkout failure now costs the order outright.
Retail Dive reported on 25 March 2026 that OpenAI had announced the previous day that it was retiring the first version of Instant Checkout, roughly six months after its 29 September 2025 launch, and that checkout was moving back to merchant sites.
Retail Dive carried OpenAI’s statement: "the initial version of Instant Checkout did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide, so we’re allowing merchants to use their own checkout experiences while we focus our efforts on product discovery."
What it means concretely
Shopify’s help centre describes the result for merchants. ChatGPT users "complete their purchase on your online store checkout in a ChatGPT in-app browser, or in a new tab when customers use ChatGPT web".
So your ordinary checkout is the checkout, driven in a fresh session on a narrow mobile viewport with nothing warm.
Favourable, and more demanding
The favourable half is real: you keep the customer relationship, the order data and control of the experience. The demanding half is that the consequences of a checkout defect changed shape. Previously a problem cost you a place in somebody else’s buy flow. Now it costs the order, on a page that is yours to fix.
Both patterns are live
The change did not consolidate the market. The same Shopify documentation says shoppers using Google AI Mode, Gemini or Microsoft Copilot complete their purchase "in the AI channel’s Shopify-powered direct checkout without having to leave their chat conversation".
A single store can therefore be selling under both models simultaneously, which means neither the data work nor the checkout work can be skipped. See which assistants send shoppers to your own checkout.
The lesson about dated claims
A merchant who read a confident article in December 2025 learned that purchases complete inside ChatGPT. One who read a confident article in April 2026 learned the opposite. Both were accurate when written.
That is why the state of agentic checkout carries a verification date and a revision log rather than being written once.
Questions
Is this good or bad for merchants?
Both, in a way worth separating. You keep the customer, the order data and a checkout you control, which is good. A checkout defect now loses the whole order rather than a place in somebody else’s flow, which raises what a defect costs.
Does this mean in-channel checkout is over?
No. Shopify’s documentation describes shoppers using Google AI Mode, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot completing in the AI channel’s Shopify-powered direct checkout. Both patterns are live at once and a single store can be selling under both.
What should I have changed as a result?
Your testing. If your checkout carries assistant referred sales, it needs to be exercised cold, signed out, on a narrow viewport inside an in-app browser, which is not what ordinary device testing covers.
