Squarespace commerce agent readiness

Squarespace stores tend to be strong on design and weak on published fact, because the platform makes it easy to express a shipping threshold or a returns window as part of a layout rather than as text. You control less of the markup than on a self hosted platform, which makes the things you do control, your copy, your policies and your product fields, matter more.

Start with the policies

This is the highest return change on a design led store and it needs no developer. A returns window set in a banner graphic, a free shipping threshold in a promotional image, a delivery estimate as part of a hero: each of those reads to an agent as you not saying.

Not saying is worse than a restrictive policy, because a stated policy can be compared and an unknown gets resolved against you. Keep the graphic and put the same facts in text on the same page. See how to publish policies as text, not images.

Fill the product fields you are given

You control less of the markup here, which makes the structured fields the platform does expose more important rather than less. Price, stock, variant options and any attribute fields available are the inputs to whatever the platform publishes on your behalf.

A field left empty because it seemed unimportant is a constraint you cannot answer later.

Write the specifics into the copy

Where there is no field for something, the product description is the fallback. Materials, dimensions, compatibility and care all belong in words somewhere, stated plainly rather than implied by a photograph.

See how to write product copy an agent can parse.

Then check what is actually served

Fetch a product page and read the served markup. You are looking for the price, the availability, the variant options and the terms. Whatever is missing is either a field you can fill or a fact you can write into the copy, and on this kind of platform it is usually one of the two rather than an engineering task.

Then walk checkout cold on a narrow viewport, which is the same test everywhere: how to test if AI agents can buy from your store.

Questions

How much of the markup can I actually change?

Less than on a self hosted platform, which is the trade you made for everything else. That is a reason to concentrate on what you fully control: the words on your product pages, your policy pages and the product fields the platform exposes.

Is a design led store at a disadvantage here?

Only where design has replaced statement. A beautiful page that also says the price, the stock status and the returns window in words is at no disadvantage at all. The problem is never the design, it is the facts that got absorbed into it.

What should I do first?

Convert the policies. Shipping cost and returns terms carried in a graphic are the commonest and most costly gap on this kind of store, and fixing them needs no developer.
