How agent payments actually settle

How an agent purchase settles follows from where the checkout happened. When the shopper lands on your own checkout, settlement is your ordinary flow with your ordinary provider. When the purchase completes inside a channel, settlement runs through whatever the platform arranged, and the questions worth asking are about timing, fees and who is named on the transaction.

How an agent purchase settles follows entirely from where the checkout happened, which is why that question is worth resolving before any question about money.

Where an agent purchase actually completes Two live patterns. In the first, the assistant sends the shopper to the merchant's own checkout. In the second, the purchase completes inside the assistant's channel. A single store can be selling under both at once. PATTERN ONE Assistant finds the product In app browser opens your site Your checkout Your checkout is the checkout. What stalls in it stalls a sale the assistant had already sent you. PATTERN TWO Assistant finds the product Checkout inside the channel the shopper never leaves the chat Your catalogue data has to carry the sale on its own.
Both patterns are live at once. A single store can be selling under both.

When it completes on your checkout

Shopify’s help centre says ChatGPT users "complete their purchase on your online store checkout in a ChatGPT in-app browser, or in a new tab when customers use ChatGPT web". That is your ordinary checkout, so it is your ordinary payment provider, your ordinary settlement timing and your ordinary fees.

What differs is the session, not the money. See how to test checkout in an in-app browser.

When it completes in the channel

The same Shopify documentation says shoppers using Google AI Mode, Gemini or Microsoft Copilot complete their purchase "in the AI channel’s Shopify-powered direct checkout without having to leave their chat conversation". Settlement then follows whatever the platform arranged, and it is worth reading rather than assuming.

On fees, carefully

Shopify’s help centre currently states: "There are no fees associated with selling in ChatGPT. You pay only your standard payment processing fees." A four percent OpenAI fee on Shopify sales made in ChatGPT was reported by PYMNTS on 21 January 2026, citing The Information citing a Shopify spokesperson, and the platform’s own live documentation contradicts it.

Two sources of good standing disagree and the primary one is the documentation. If your margin model depends on this, check the platform documentation on the day you build the model. See the state of agentic checkout.

The four questions for your provider

  1. How are agent initiated transactions identified in your reporting?
  2. Does settlement timing differ?
  3. What appears on the customer’s statement, and does that affect dispute rates?
  4. What evidence of authorisation is retained if a payment is disputed?

See merchant of record questions in agentic checkout.

Questions

Do I get paid differently?

If the purchase completed on your own checkout, no. If it completed in a channel, settlement follows the platform’s arrangement, which is worth reading rather than assuming matches your usual flow.

Are there extra fees?

Shopify’s help centre currently says there are no fees associated with selling in ChatGPT and that you pay only your standard payment processing fees. A widely repeated four percent figure could not be confirmed at a primary source and is treated as contested rather than as fact.

What should I ask my provider?

How agent initiated transactions are identified, what settlement timing applies, what appears on the customer’s statement, and what evidence is retained if a payment is disputed.
